This question comes up so often by many juniors and varsity players and their parents. And I used to believe that for most of them the answer was probably no. But since I've started my quest for finding out what it really takes to build a Pro Tennis Player-I’ve had to change my opinion on that question 360 degrees. I now believe that anyone who has the desire and the passion to be a pro tennis player can and will make it provided that they are willing to put in the work that it takes, and they have the right team of coaches, parents, teachers and encouragers. That’s the catch 22; most people would love to be a pro tennis player but are not willing to put in the work. In Benjamin S. Bloom’s book "Developing Talent in Young People" Benjamin's research has raised questions about earlier views that only gifted children or children with special aptitudes are necessary prerequisites of talent development. His study provided an in depth look into the development of talent in children in several fields-one of which was tennis. His study sampled 18 U.S. Tennis players that were ranked in the top ten in the world between 1968 and 1979. Some of the findings in his study point to the major impact of enjoyment (fun factor), the long and intensive process of encouragement, nurturance, education and training in helping them develop their capabilities so fully. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is helping someone reach the highest level. |
